Internation Fibromyalgia Awareness Day

International Fibromyalgia Awareness Day  - 12th May

May 12th has been designated as International Awareness Day for Chronic Immunological and Neurological Diseases (CIND) since 1992. The CIND illnesses include Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), Fibromyalgia (FM), Gulf War Syndrome (GWS) and Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS).

May 12th was chosen as it is the birthday of Florence Nightingale. She was believed to have suffered from ME/CFS/FM.

History of Fibromyalgia Awareness Day

The first National Fibromyalgia Awareness Day was observed in 1992 in honor of the birthday of Florence Nightingale after historical documentation was reviewed and suggested she suffered from symptoms similar to Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue.

On May 12th of each year, International Fibromyalgia Awareness Day events extend throughout the world and through the month of May in an effort to raise awareness and funds to help further support those with Fibromyalgia and/or other chronic pain illnesses.

How to celebrate Fibromyalgia Day

Awareness and funding are the keys to battling the enigma that is Fibromyalgia, and this day was created for just that.

On May 12th each year, observers of this day get together and take part in fundraising events, charity runs, tea parties – anything to get the conversation going.

Everyone can do this

  • do this one simple thing - tell one other person about May 12th and ask that person to tell one other person. If we all do this, then there will be a wave of knowledge that will spread around the world and in no time everyone will know about us.

  • Everyone that uses Facebook, LIKE and SHARE at least one image about Fibromyalgia to your timeline.

  • We need media coverage! If you know anyone, please contact them and ask for a story. Send an email to your local newspapers (an article or letter to the editor), TV stations and radio stations and ask them to mention it. Call in to talk radio shows. Let us know if you have success and provide us with a link to anything that gets published. Also, please help us by sending us a sample of your contact letter so we can make a draft letter people can use next year.

  • Light Up the Night Challenge -  We are asking you to light up public buildings and your own residence with purple. If you light your own house, send a picture to

  • Proclaim your city or town by writing your Mayor asking them to support the awareness of Fibromyalgia

  • Decorate your garden or tie ribbons around trees or mailboxes in purple and send a picture to us.

  • Dress in purple and tell people. Perhaps dye your hair. Also capture the moment and send it to us

  • Make your own event and let us know about it. If you have ideas for events but aren't well enough to organize it, just send us the idea. We're making a list of ideas for next year and will include yours. It may inspire someone else.

  • Write to your  local newspaper and ask for them to print a story on May 12th. Let us know if you can get your local news to report on it.

Put your shoes outside with a note

On May 12th, take a pair of shoes (or several) and put them on your doorstep, lawn, or driveway with a note about what these shoes represent now that you are ill with Fibromyalgia. Take a photo and post it on social media and use the hashtags #idon'tlooksick #Fibromyalgia #fibromyalgiaawareness

Show Your Face

Post a selfie from your bed or home to show that your are one of the millions who are missing due to FM.  Use the above hashtags.

Turn the camera on yourself

Say a little bit about yourself, and explain what you are demanding from your government. Keep it short, sweet and to-the-point. Send it to us and we will submit a collection to Parliament.
